A water trap is not generally used on its own but as part of a multi step system to remove as much moisture from the air as possible. Coalescing separators utilize a filter element to trap contaminants in your compressed air supply as it moves through the filter. Water in compressed air systems can result in other problems for your system too. In cold weather accumulations of water may freeze and burst lines.

The liquid collects in a water trap and is removed through an automatic drain valve. It is especially used for applications that require extremely dry air such as painting sandblasting or powder coating. While there are a variety of options for compressed air system drainage properly installed drain traps are the key to removing liquid continuously and automatically without wasting air or gas. Draining the centrifugal air separator can be done either manually of with the installation of an automatic drain system.
